A few days that change everything
What an amazing time we had in Mozambique serving alongside the Word of Life team there. Every year, they partner with a local Christian school to run a camp for their high school students. One of the most exciting parts of these camps is the opportunity to share the gospel with these students, many of which come from difficult family backgrounds & either non-Christian or Muslim homes.
The first camp was for grades 7-9 & the second camp was for grades 10-12. Between the two camps, we had a total of about 100 students. The theme of our camp this year was ‘Do Something’ & we challenged the campers to take action in their walk with the Lord. Our whole team of 13 staff, interns, & young adults agreed that this is one of the most difficult camps we’ve worked at as we counseled teens who were really struggling in different areas but praise the Lord for providing us with the strength & wisdom we needed to minister to each camper’s needs. Some had been coming for years while others were coming for the very first time. Some chose to place their trust in Christ to save them while others chose to surrender the things in their lives that were keeping them from doing something in their walk with the Lord. God clearly spoke to each camper through the different messages including those who had been coming for several years but who’s hearts were still hardened towards the gospel.
One camper, Abdul, has grown up in a Muslim home & holds strongly to his beliefs but for some reason, kept coming back to camp. This year, something changed. On the last night after our campfire service where we gave the final challenge, he left in tears. Up until now, he has been unresponsive to the messages but this time, God was clearly doing something in his heart. He had asked for a Bible & said that he was finally starting to get it. We don’t know the full extent of what God did that night but we pray that the Lord continues to draw him to himself. Abdul is just one of the many who’s lives changed during these 10 days of camp. What a privilege to be a part of that change especially in the lives of the girls in my cabin. I saw God challenge them in big ways & trust the Lord to continue his work in each of their lives. Please pray with me that these campers will continue to live out the commitments they've made as they go back home to difficult & challenging lives.
